Program Design
The Minor in Leadership Studies consists of 21 credits (detailed below) and a portfolio that demonstrate key competencies in leadership as identified by ETSU alumni and community leaders.
Core Competencies
MGMT 3000, Organizational Management and ELPA 4460/MGMT 4460, Leadership Studies is required for all students, satisfying the competencies of Leadership and management. In addition, students must take one course in each of the three additional competency areas:

Additional Focused Competencies
An additional six credit hours of course work are required to focus and enhance students' leadership skills. The purpose of these courses is to develop the students' understanding of leadership through multicultural, sociological and experiential methods. These courses, from the Departments of Management and Marketing, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Military Science, Physical Education, History, Humanities, Political Science, Mass Communications, Sociology, Speech, Women’s Studies, have been reviewed by the coordinating committee of the minor. The two elective courses may not be taken in the same department.
Leadership Portfolio
A comprehensive portfolio is required of students in the Leadership Studies Minor. Student progress on the portfolio is monitored by the Center for Student Life and Leadership. The portfolio will provide a purposeful collection of work that demonstrates students' progress and achievement in leadership development. Students will formally document their leadership experiences through portfolio-related activities. Items included in the portfolio are:
- Documented hands-on service project of at least 15 hours. A reflection paper is required about the project.
- Videotape of student giving a presentation with self-critique and critique provided by the Writing and Communication Center.
- Documented leadership service in a campus program, organization, or committee.
- Documented attendance of three campus arts events (one each in music, visual arts, and theatre). The documentation will include a written assessment of each event.
- Documented completion of at least three leadership style and skill assessment instruments.
- A minimum of three reference letters that address demonstrated leadership and potential.
- Identification of a mentor by the end of the junior year with documented meetings with mentor at least three times during the senior year.
